New Moon marks the beginning of the process of preparing ritual Abramelin oil, for sex magickal anointing of the body, and of the ritual tools. The oil is based upon the Oil of Abramelin, but differs from Aleister Crowley’s version and the traditional version.

As this magickal oil is central to the Great Work and to the process of symbolising the unique role of the magickian, the oil should also be a unique formulation. While the oil retains the essential qualities and meaning of the traditional oil, it is my approach to encourage the unique interpretation of each individual. All magickal tools ideally reference the power of that which came before and is living now, as well as the personal path of that magickian. This oil was formulated to celebrate a sex positive and feminine, gender fluid or non-binary current, such as that of Babalon, Madimi or Zulsa.

To make the oil most usable for sexual magick the method of mixing essential oils was chosen over the mastication method used by MacGregor Mathers, or the recipe in The Book of Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage. The recipe also differs from Crowley’s version in that it uses a higher percentage of olive oil (which is closer to the traditional forms) to allow the oil to be used liberally on the body. Crowley’s version is known to cause irritation to the skin due to the high cinnamon content. This can have its uses, but for our approach a milder oil is required.

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse – January 10th, 2020

Initial preparations and gathering of the oils for the beginning of the process at the New Moon were undertaken during the eclipse.

New Moon – January 24th, 2020

A glass vessel was used as the ‘womb’ of the oil, where the different oils will be mixed before the finished oil is placed into the ritual bottle for use within magickal workings. The moon shaped altar table was used for the mixing and the oil was blessed and consecrated throughout the process. The fragrance on day one was raw and the energetic impression was indistinct.

The Blessings – January 25th to February 8th, 2020

The oil was blessed and consecrated daily with full robes, or ritual nudity and magickal tools. It was clear that each day the oil seemed to change and develop. The energetic impression also seemed to change with each blessing and ritual. Opening of the womb vessel and taking in the fragrance became a central part of this process, it was like the oil itself revealed what it needed and what to focus on during the process.

Full Moon – February 9th, 2020

As I opened the womb vessel it was clear that the oil had totally transformed from it’s energy and fragrance on the new moon. It now seemed radiant, golden, and reached into a primordial aspect of my psyche. The fragrance was beautiful, subtle, and also powerful.

Element of Spirit – April 13th, 2020

The one aspect of the preparation of the oil that was missing was to include some of my original batch of Abramelin oil that I made at the beginning of my magickal work decades ago. The tradition is to add some of an earlier batch as a seed oil to symbolise the element of spirit, the binding element. I knew that I still had a small amount of the oil, but I did not know where it was.

Then in early April I heard noises near the area I now keep my oils, including my ritual vessel filled with Abramelin oil. I thought nothing of it, but then the noise came again, and a long box that I hadn’t moved in a very long time fell forward. I glanced over to see the bottle of my original Abramelin oil right there. The strange thing was that I thought I had looked for it there, but couldn’t find it. Then it seemed to find me, so I was able to complete the oil with the spirit element.

Conclusion

I also prepared a misting bottle with pure water and drops of the Abramelin Oil added, this would be used for daily purification of my home, clothing and body. I also prepared small amounts of the oil to share with those I feel I have a long standing magickal bond. I was clear when I completed this process that sharing of the oil was important, it’s almost that each small bottle of the oil is like a seed to begin a sacred process for others. In essence the oil seems to grow beyond the individual who prepared it.
